Builder Bob's Tips: Preparing Your Home for Spring

Though it might be hard to believe, milder temperatures will be in the forecast soon. Once that Minnesota snow melts, it's important to complete preventative maintenance on your home to ensure smoothing running and avoid potential problems. See below Builder Bob’s Tips for keeping your home in good shape for the spring months ahead.

During the cold winter season, windows and doors can separate from the frame.

• ACTION ITEM: Inspect all caulking around windows and doors and make repairs where necessary.

The fall and winter months can leave behind grime on your home’s siding, concrete pavers, and brick walls.

• ACTION ITEM: Hose down those areas where dirt has built up and while doing so inspect for rot.

Tree leaves, branches, and dirt can accumulate in your gutters over the fall and winter months.

• ACTION ITEM: Clean out any debris from your gutters and make sure downspouts are secure.

After the harsh winter months, AC units can have a hard time starting up.

ACTION ITEM: Clean filters or replace if disposable. Pro-tip, test your air conditioning system before the hot summer months arrive. You will be grateful to find any issues before you are using your system daily.

Does your dryer seem to be running a bit slow?

• ACTION ITEM: Clean dryer vents and area under the dryer. It’s important to remove and dust, lint, or other materials. Doing so will improve your dryer’s efficiency and significantly reduce the possibility of a home fire.

Lastly, and most importantly, test your emergency systems. It is very important that your alarms work correctly when needed!
